NEW YORK — Scrap lead-acid battery prices will likely rise further this year from the "record (price) levels" seen over the past few months, RSR Corp. president and chief executive officer Robert Finn told AMM, adding that at the same time U.S. capacity could fall.
"This is not surprising when you have 1.4 million tons of capacity in the United States and only 1.1 million tons of battery scrap available. In addition to that, roughly 250,000 to 300,000 metric tons are being exported to Mexico on a regular basis," he said. "When you take that amount of scrap out of the marketplace, something’s got to give."....
