Outages foster aluminum spot inquiries

NEW YORK Maintenance outages at several aluminum billet casthouses have led to an uptick in spot inquiries.
Brampton, Ontario-based Matalco Inc. halted production at its Toronto facility for maintenance June 30 and completed the work July 8, while Bluffton, Ind.-based Alexin LLC began its shutdown July 9 and plans to complete the work by July 13, AMM understands.
"Most of the primary and secondary producers will take the (July 4) week off to perform maintenance. Some do two weeks a year, one in July and one in December," one producer source said.
"Alexin and Matalco took their plants offline (around) the same time in July," a second producer source said, adding that as a result he had received inquires for spot billet this week "but we dont have any available." ....
