Ormet may curtail all smelting, lay off 998

NEW YORK — Ormet Corp. has notified state government officials that it may curtail all six potlines at its 270,000-tonne-per-year aluminum smelter in Hannibal, Ohio.

"Such curtailment of operations and reduction in force is expected to be indefinite," the company wrote in a July 19 letter filed with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The company has issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notices to the 998 workers who would be affected by the potential shutdown. ....
