Conflict scrap rule needed more input: Weidner

MILWAUKEE — Legislators on Capitol Hill did not seek adequate input from the steel industry before proposing to classify steel scrap as a conflict mineral, said Bob Weidner, president, chief executive and secretary of the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI).

"There’s no question that on a human rights issue, people are doing bad things in places like Congo. But that’s not the issue," Weidner told AMM. "My comment is, why didn’t we have more of these hearings before the proposal came up? Without the proper vetting process, the industry gets slapped with....
