Sims clears first hurdle in RI expansion

NEW YORK Sims Metal Management Ltd. has received conditional approval of a preliminary plan for a new scrap metal processing facility in Rhode Island.
The planning board of Johnston, R.I., where Sims already operates a feeder yard and shredder, also gave conditional approval to the companys commercial and industrial site plans for its proposed project on nearly 16 acres of industrial land.
Sims project manager Albert Hammel told a public hearing last month that the facility will operate a shredderthe "largest produced in the U.S."with 45 to 60 employees.....
