NEW YORK — U.S. shredded scrap exports took a beating during the first six months of this year, with No. 1 heavy melting steel taking over as volume leader.

No. 1 heavy melt exports rose 2.9 percent to 3,976,591 tonnes in the first half, accounting for 35.3 percent of total ferrous scrap exports of 11,255,179 tonnes; a year earlier, shipments of 3,864,409 tonnes to foreign buyers accounted for 31.8 percent of total ferrous scrap exports of 12,166,396 tonnes.....
