Scrap broker Gerald Varnum III dies at 71

PITTSBURGH — Ohio scrap broker Gerald "Jerry" Varnum III, president of GFV Co. Inc., has died at the age of 71.

Varnum, remembered for his integrity and predictable habits, followed in his father’s footsteps in titanium scrap, beginning his career at NL Industries Inc.’s Titanium division in Sayreville, N.J., before moving to Luria Brothers & Co. Inc. in the 1970s.

"I have known Jerry for more than 35 years. He was my first boss in the scrap industry, and Jerry and I worked together buying shredder feed for the Luria shredder in Beaver Falls, Pa.," Sims Metal Management Ltd. vice president Blake Kelley told AMM. "He was full of personality."....
