PITTSBURGH — Ohio scrap broker Gerald "Jerry" Varnum III, president of GFV Co. Inc., has died at the age of 71.

Varnum, remembered for his integrity and predictable habits, followed in his father’s footsteps in titanium scrap, beginning his career at NL Industries Inc.’s Titanium division in Sayreville, N.J., before moving to Luria Brothers & Co. Inc. in the 1970s.
