South Africa holds landmark meeting on chrome exports

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — In a milestone, the South African government has met with representatives from all factions of the nation’s chrome and ferrochrome industry to discuss what to do about unbridled chrome ore exports, sources told AMM sister publication Metal Bulletin.
The first-of-its-kind meeting took place "at the end of last week," around Aug. 24, sources said. The country’s Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) invited key players from the ferrochrome, independent chrome ore and platinum by-product UG2 industries.
"This was the very first meeting—early days, still," one of the attendees told Metal Bulletin. "The initiative to do this is constructive. It’s to try and find a way forward for the industry at large. We didn’t make headway as of yet, but I would not expect that as such from a single meeting."....
