Sales jump as automakers ramp up

CHICAGO — Major U.S. automakers logged a surge in sales in August as new vehicle sales remained a bright spot in an otherwise lackluster market.

August sales by the top seven automakers totaled nearly 1.12 million vehicles, up 20.4 percent from the same month last year, pushing the year-to-date total to 8.37 million vehicles, up 14.6 percent from the first eight months of last year, according to AMM calculations.....
