Ex-shredder site joins Superfund priority list

PITTSBURGH — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added an abandoned auto shredding operation in Maine to its National Priorities List for cleanup under the federal Superfund program and has proposed that an idled zinc facility in Kansas be added to the list.

Leeds Metal Inc., a 36-acre metal processing and auto shredding operation in Leeds, operated from 1969 to 1984. Its shredding activities were curtailed in 1980, just before implementation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.....
