Steel service centers see little Sept. change

NEW YORK — North American service centers expect to see little change in steel shipments this month following August levels that improved from July but were down from a year earlier.
"We think our September will be a little bit improved but not by any significant number," a source at one national steel distributor told AMM. "We’re not seeing a whole lot (of demand) other than the energy side of the business, which continues to be fairly strong, while there’s a lot of uncertainty in the other markets."
Service center sources said overall demand remains relatively unchanged so far this month, even as a few segments have experienced a slight uptick over the past two weeks.
"Automotive used to drive the steel industry, and now it’s recovered; we’ve seen production at pre-crash levels," one northern service center source said. But "it’s not enough to pull up the slack for construction."....
