NEW YORK Ports on the East and Gulf coasts are bracing for a potential work stoppagethe first in 35 yearswhen the labor contract with the International Longshoremens Association (ILA) expires at the end of this month.
The union has threatened to strike at 14 portsincluding such metal-heavy ports as Mobile, Ala.; Houston; New Orleans; New York; and New Jerseyon Oct. 1 if negotiations with the U.S. Maritime Alliance fail to produce a new agreement, leaving hundreds of thousands of tons of cargo on the docks.....
