GM to increase aluminum use in vehicles

NEW YORK — General Motors Co.’s research department has developed welding technology that will increase the amount of aluminum used in vehicles, the Detroit-based automaker said.
GM’s resistance spot welding process uses a patented multiring domed electrode that can weld aluminum to aluminum. This will eliminate nearly 2 pounds of rivets from aluminum body parts such as hoods, liftgates and doors, GM said. ....
