Japan’s aluminum demand weak but premiums sky-high

SINGAPORE Record-high aluminum premiums being paid by Japanese buyers have absolutely no correlation to actual demand, according to a senior industry official in Japan.
"Japanese buyers have been forced to agree to record-high premiums for the fourth quarter. But it really surprises me because the premiums absolutely do not reflect actual demand, which is not very strong," the official said. "Premiums are being driven solely by supply-side factors, and this is not a healthy situation. The price will have to be passed onto users, but I cannot see how they can really afford it."....
