Steel tubular prices stumble in September

CHICAGO — Prices for almost all steel pipe and tube products fell in September as a perfect storm of lower scrap and steel coil tags, plus tepid demand and oversupply, walloped both energy and nonenergy markets.

That downward trend is expected to continue, especially for welded products, according to most market participants surveyed by AMM. The market for flat-rolled steel—the substrate used to make welded tubulars—is again saturated, some said, as a previously anticipated work stoppage failed to materialize at two major integrated steelmakers (amm.com, Sept. 13).

In the hollow structural sections (HSS) sector, market sources said mills have rescinded previous price hikes. The amounts appear to vary by region and might have started in the southeastern United States, some said, but few expect the trend to reverse course in the near term.....
