CHICAGO — Increasing capacity and declining profit margins continue to dog the global flat-rolled stainless steel industry, largely due to increasing expansions in Asia, according to Markus Moll, managing director and senior analyst at Austrian firm Steel & Metals Market Research GmbH.
"There is word out there in Asia that if you don’t produce 5 million tonnes within five years, you’re out," he told participants at AMM’s 26th annual Stainless and Its Alloys Conference in Chicago. "I don’t know who put that into the minds of these companies, but it seems to be the 5-million club, (as) they call it." That goal has spurred large Chinese producers to take on further greenfield expansions. ....
