NEW YORK The stainless steel surcharge system is still causing headaches for consumers due to the resulting price fluctuations.
"The surcharge is one of the most detrimental facts of our business," David Cornelius, president of Munhall, Pa.-based stainless welded pipe and tube maker Marcegaglia USA Inc., said at AMMs 26th annual Stainless and Its Alloys Conference in Chicago. "Sometimes as efficient as we are in the plant, we still end up losing on the surcharge."
Users of the metal often have to publish their prices long in advance of their orders, which means that surcharge changes in the interim can have detrimental effects.....
