LNG plan could devour 1.7M tons of steel

CHICAGO — A multibillion "mega-project" to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Alaska could consume nearly 2 million tons of steel, but might also take many years to complete, according to a group of energy companies spearheading the effort.

The project, "of unprecedented scale," is expected to cost $45 billion to $65 billion and to consume up to 1.7 million tons of steel, according to a document sent to the office of Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell this past week. During the peak construction phase, it is also expected to create 15,000 jobs.....
