Vedanta considers alumina cuts, posts record copper production

LONDON — Vedanta Resources Plc is considering temporarily shutting down its Lanjigarh alumina refinery in India after alumina production dropped in the company’s second fiscal quarter.
"With reduced availability of third-party bauxite, we are evaluating various options, including a temporary shutdown of refinery operations," Vedanta said Tuesday in its production results release for the period ended Sept. 30.
Alumina production at Lanjigarh came to 205,000 tonnes in the second fiscal quarter, the company said, with a first-half total of 423,000 tonnes. The volumes marked year-on-year falls of 10 percent and 6 percent, respectively, it said.
Meanwhile, the company’s Indian aluminum smelters—Jharsuguda I in Orissa and Korba II in Chattisgarh—performed well, operating above their rated capacities. ....
