US still overproducing steel without RG: Lowrey

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The United States likely has too much steel capacity even assuming that the former RG Steel LLC’s assets are closed permanently, according to one industry consultant.

RG Steel had about 7.5 million tons per year of hot-strip mill capacity out of a U.S. total of 88 million tons. That "pretty significant" number made the company among the largest steel mills in the United States in terms of capacity, if not in shipments, Paul Lowrey, managing director of Pittsburgh-based Steel Research Associates LLC, said.....
