Producers, importers clash over foreign pipe

NEW YORK — U.S. pipe producers and importers of circular-welded carbon-quality pipe disagreed over the impact on the U.S. market of shipments from India, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam, citing changing demand and increased shipments.

Harvey, Ill.-based Allied Tube & Conduit Corp.’s Morrisville, Pa., facility and Welded Tube Co.’s Berkeley, S.C., facility were forced to shut down this year due to allegedly unfairly traded imports, a U.S. International Trade Commission hearing was told Wednesday.

"Unfortunately, the reality today is instead of U.S. pipe mills using sheet made domestically by USW members, we have foreign-produced pipe flooding into the U.S. market," Tom Conway, vice president of the United Steelworkers union, said in a prepared statement. "This is a horribly vicious cycle, which hurts our members making pipe and making steel." ....
