Mixed signals seen for nickel premiums in '13

NEW YORK — There are mixed signals ahead for nickel premiums, with those for melting-grade material seen weakening while plating grade is said to be in store for a pickup.

Early indications are that contract premiums for melting-grade nickel will weaken slightly next year, with sources pointing to supply that is more than adequate and demand that is essentially flat from such end-use segments as stainless. Meanwhile, plating-grade premiums are seeing some pickup as consumers are worried about the eventual shutdown of Vale SA’s nickel refinery in Thompson, Manitoba, sources told AMM.....
