Better margins, higher prices lift Arch Coal earnings in qtr.

NEW YORK — Arch Coal Inc.’s net income rose more than fivefold to $45.8 million in the third quarter vs. the same year-ago period despite a 9.3-percent year-on-year drop in revenue to nearly $1.09 billion.

"During the third quarter, we saw margins in both of our western regions expand due to increased shipment levels, higher price realization and strong cost control," Arch Coal president and chief executive officer John Eaves said.....
