Ambatovy starts production in 3d qtr.: Sherritt

NEW YORK — Nickel and cobalt production kicked off at the Ambatovy nickel and cobalt project in Madagascar during the third quarter, according to Sherritt International Corp.’s earnings report.
Total nickel production for the quarter stood at 2,370 tonnes of metal with an average nickel content exceeding 99.8 percent, while cobalt production totaled 165 tonnes of material with an average cobalt content exceeding 99.8 percent, Sherritt said.
The company had expected to start metal production as early as the first quarter of 2012 (amm.com, July 27, 2011) but permitting issues delayed the start up (amm.com, Sept. 12) .....
