South African producers concerned over power tariff hike

JOHANNESBURG — South African steel and ferroalloys producers have expressed concerns over the power tariff hike proposed by national power company Eskom, with some saying the move may “change their business model."
“We are now in a position where we must think aggressively about how to address our business risks,” Cathie Lewis, company secretary and spokeswoman for Evraz Highveld Steel & Vanadium told AMM sister publication Metal Bulletin. “The issue of power costs is a huge headache for our business and we are not alone in this,” she said. “For us, these increases literally cost millions and billions.
