SSAB chases higher margins with Q&T plate line

NEW YORK — SSAB Americas has boosted its quenched-and-tempered plate production capacity by 220,000 tonnes annually with the official start-up of a new Q&T line at its Axis, Ala., facility.

The approximately $300-million investment in the line will position the company to expand its service to customers in North America, Latin America and China.

"This is an important step for us today," Martin Lindqvist, president and chief executive officer of Swedish parent company SSAB AB, told AMM in a telephone interview following a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Alabama Thursday. "We are one of a few companies that will be producing this steel in North America and exporting it to China."....
