NEW YORK — Aluminum billet shipments from Alcoa Inc.’s Ferndale, Wash., smelter were delayed late last week due to furnace problems.

A mechanical breakdown on one of the homogenizing furnaces, which stabilize billet chemistry, forced the Pittsburgh-based producer to temporarily shut down the furnace for a few days, a source....
