Malaga mine offline on processor outage

NEW YORK — Malaga Inc. has suspended operations at its Pasto Bueno Mine in Peru two weeks after a power outage forced the company to take its tungsten processing plant at the site offline.
A severed hydroelectric transmission line cut off power at the plant on Oct. 22, and after an effort to supply the processing plant with diesel-generated power proved too costly, the plant was put on care and maintenance (amm.com, Oct. 22).
Now the company has suspended mining operations as unprocessed raw tungsten stockpiles accumulate, claiming the mining shutdown will “reduce its costs and preserve cash.”
“Ongoing work was continued for a few weeks and then we decided it’s not worth it to continue to feed our stockpile of this material,” a Malaga spokeswoman told AMM. “Management decided it was not worth it to continue operating the mine at a high cost.”
