Chile copper workers strike, threaten another stoppage

SANTIAGO, Chile — Unions representing about 25,000 workers in Chile’s major copper mines called a 24-hour strike April 9, and threatened a further stoppage depending on the government’s response.

"It is 100-percent confirmed. Workers from state and private mining companies will take part. We’ll see the response (of the government and private sector). If nothing changes, we may set another stoppage," Juan Olguín, mediation and organization secretary of the Chilean Copper Workers’ Federation, said.....
