Campaign to replace US dollar bill with coin heats up

WASHINGTON — A campaign to replace U.S. dollar bills with coins made predominantly out of copper will be stepped up with the introduction of a bill in Congress next month, one of its supporters says.

The coin would provide billions in savings because it lasts for an average of 30 years vs. around two years for paper bills, Shawn Smeallie of the Dollar Coin Alliance told the American Copper Council in Washington. ....
