Rusal tries to set example with output cut

SINGAPORE — United Co. Rusal has called for industrywide production cuts to check a supply glut.

Rusal’s primary aluminum output totaled 1.01 million tonnes in the first quarter, down 42,000 tonnes—around 4 percent—from a year earlier due to capacity cuts at less-efficient smelters.

"The rationalization of production and a desire to help reach the balance of supply and demand remain at the forefront of Rusal’s business development plans as a leading aluminum producer," chief executive officer Oleg Deripaska said in a statement. ....
