Steel mill shipments dip year on year in April: AISI

NEW YORK U.S. mills shipped some 7.98 million net tons of steel in April, up 0.7 percent from 7.92 million net tons the previous month but down 3.2 percent from 8.25 million net tons in the year-ago period, according to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute.
Year-to-date shipments reached 31.55 million net tons in April, down 6.3 percent from 33.66 million net tons in the first four months of 2012.
Major changes in April included cold-rolled sheet (up 10 percent from March), hot-dipped galvanized sheets and strip (up 5 percent), and hot-rolled sheet (down 4 percent).
