PITTSBURGH — A 29-year veteran of the scrap metal industry is now working independently to broker deals to local and global players.

Greg Dixon established Smart Recycling Management LLC, focusing on brokerage, consulting and industrial management initiatives.

He quietly left Cohen Brothers Inc.’s Baker Iron & Metal Co. division in Lexington, Ky., where he had been vice president of national accounts.

Dixon continues to work from Lexington but is not concentrating on any specific geographic area. "I am interested in doing things well and keeping deals small and niche in nature. This gives me the ability to react to any situation. I am more doing 200- or 300-ton deals than big deals," brokering tons obtained from dealers to mills, he said.

Dixon also is consulting with small scrapyards on logistical and operational matters. "There are guys like myself with a broad range of experience who can do multiple things. I have worked with national accounts, and logistics is a big part of that equation," he said.

As for industrial management, Dixon said he is working to contract with companies to manage industrial customers. "This can happen with one plant or if a company has multiple plants. I then analyze each facility and look for ways to improve. I am primarily doing this for the scrap dealer, but could also contract with the plant directly to assist them," he said.

Dixon remains active with the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, where he is chairman of the Washington-based trade group’s Government Relations Committee. He also is a board member of ISRI’s Ohio Valley Chapter.
