Beam price increase hinges on scrap

NEW YORK — Structural steel buyers are beginning to think about the possibility of higher beam prices, an eventuality they admit hangs on some so-far tenuous assumptions.

Nevertheless, while there’s certainly no groundswell of opinion that an increase is in the offing—and there’s little evidence of hedging against a hike—any bias for a price change is probably on the upside. But even the most optimistic of buyers acknowledge this would probably require scrap to continue firming in the face of flat demand for beams, which this year is estimated to be running at an annualized rate flat with last year’s 4 million tons.....
