CHICAGO — Bonnell Aluminum Inc. has been certified for automotive quality management at its Newnan, Ga., facility as it looks to grow its automotive presence.

The International Organization for Standardization/Technical Specification (ISO/TS) certification comes after the company, a subsidiary of Richmond, Va.-based Tredegar Corp., in February announced plans to spend $17 million to boost its extrusion capabilities to serve the automotive and light truck markets (amm.com, Feb. 12).

The project includes adding a 9-inch, 3,600-ton aluminum extrusion press dedicated to extruded products for car and light truck original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Bonnell said July 17. Precision cutting equipment will also be installed, the company said.

Equipment orders have been placed with a planned start-up scheduled in early 2014, Bonnell said.

Bonnell is positioned to become a "significant supplier" to the automotive market, company president W. Brook Hamilton said during Tredegar’s annual shareholder meeting in May. The new extrusion press and handling system at Newnan will be capable of supplying 15 million pounds of specialty product to Tier 1 automotive OEMs annually, he said (amm.com, May 24).
