AK Steel posts 2d-qtr. loss on outage

NEW YORK — An unplanned outage at AK Steel Corp.’s Middletown, Ohio blast furnace and a decline in sales to the electrical steel and carbon spot markets led the company to post a $40.4-million net loss for the second quarter of 2013, its eighth consecutive quarterly net loss.
The West Chester, Ohio-based company reported net sales of $1.4 billion on shipments of 1,323,700 tons for the three months ended June 30, amounting to an average selling price of $1,061 per ton. This compared to net sales of almost $1.54 billion on shipments of 1,335,800 tons in the second quarter of 2012 and net sales of nearly $1.37 million on shipments of 1,289,800 tons for the first quarter of 2013.....
