NEW YORK — Sims Metal Management Ltd. has received unanimous approval from the Rhode Island’s Woonsocket City Council on an application for a second-hand dealer’s license.

The license is the first step in a process that could lead to a new Sims recycling facility in Woonsocket.

The approval came after executives of the world’s largest metals recycler assured city council members that the yard would only be used to store metals destined for processing at other locations.

"Sims is exploring an opportunity to locate a feeder yard in Woonsocket, with the hearing being one step in the process," a Sims spokesman said Sept. 5 via e-mail.
