Brazil’s pig iron exports fall for fifth consecutive month

SÃO PAULO — Merchant pig iron exports from Brazil fell for a fifth consecutive month in August on a year-on-year basis, reflecting lower demand for the scrap substitute in the international market.

Shipments abroad reached 134,013 tonnes last month, down 8.3 percent from 146,213 tonnes in August 2012, according to figures from the country’s foreign trade ministry, MDIC. Exports also declined 21.2 percent from 169,991 tonnes in July.....
