Billet negotiations said slower for 2014

CHICAGO — Contract talks for 2014 aluminum billet premiums are slower than last year while suppliers and consumers tussle over prices, market participants told AMM.

AMM’s spot billet premium widened slightly to 11 to 12.5 cents per pound Sept. 27 from 11 to 12.4 cents previously, although some producers insisted that numbers were trending higher.

Some pointed to power concerns at primary producers as potentially tightening the market, or to higher scrap prices forcing secondary billet producers to boost premiums. Market sources also said producers would unlikely give ground on billet in the face of eroding Midwest premiums for P1020 aluminum ingot.....
