Manufacturing index hits 2013 high: ISM

CHICAGO — U.S. manufacturing activity grew in September, with the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) purchasing managers index rising to 56.2, its highest point this year, led by growth in employment, order backlogs, inventories and material prices.

Survey respondents "are generally positive and optimistic about increasing demand and improving business conditions," according to Bradley J. Holcomb, who chairs the ISM’s Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. The survey didn’t ask about the potential consequences of a federal government shutdown.....
