Gov't shutdown may prompt UTC layoffs

LOS ANGELES United Technologies Corp. (UTC) has slated an initial layoff of 2,000 employees next week, with the potential of furloughing more than 5,000 workers in its aerospace units if the U.S. government shutdown stretches into next month.
The Hartford, Conn.-based manufacturer said it will be forced to lay off "thousands of workers due to the absence of inspectors from the Defense Contract Management Agency" who audit and approve military production.....
