Japan’s titanium shipments backslide

LAS VEGAS — Japanese titanium producers are again fighting a severe downturn in their markets following a temporary spike in new desalination plant construction, which brought a near-recovery from the global recession, the president of the Japan Titanium Society (JTS) said this week.

Shinya Higuchi, who is also executive vice president of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp., Tokyo, told the International Titanium Association (ITA) that the industry’s mill product shipments in the first six months of 2013 fell 42 percent.....
