US steel market outlook bright for 2014

SÃO PAULO — U.S. steel participants can look forward to a relatively attractive market in 2014, particularly as access to affordable energy and industry consolidation will give it a leg up on foreign counterparts, according to World Steel Association director-general Edwin Basson.

"If you think about it on a global basis, what’s the key scarce resource that everyone has to face? Energy is the big scarcity," Basson told AMM on the sidelines of the association’s annual conference in São Paulo. "The U.S. is in a very, very fortunate position ... they can generate shale gas, which today gives the U.S.....
