CHICAGO — Ormet Corp. wants Ohio officials to intervene to keep power flowing to its smelter and related facilities in Hannibal, Ohio.

The bankrupt aluminum producer, also based in Hannibal, said it believes Columbus, Ohio-based utility American Electric Power Co. Inc. “may soon be entitled to disconnect Ormet’s electricity service,” according to a motion filed Oct. 22 with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).

Ormet wants the commission to require AEP to provide its Hannibal operations with power during its bankruptcy proceedings, citing potential environmental damage.

Ormet argues that it is “imperative” that electricity be maintained as it shuts down its Hannibal facilities “in order to prepare for the disposition of Ormet’s assets,” the company said in the motion.

Seeking an expedited decision, Ormet noted that its Oct. 2 power bill from AEP is due Oct. 23 and that the utility could cut electrical service as soon as Oct. 30 if payment is not made by Oct. 25.
