Leggett & Platt earnings up 8.4% despite sales decline

NEW YORK — Leggett & Platt Inc. reported higher third-quarter earnings despite a drop in overall sales on weakness in its industrial materials and commercial fixturing and components segments.

The Carthage, Mo.-based diversified manufacturer posted net income of $71.3 million for the three months ended Sept. 30, up 8.4 percent from $65.8 million in the same period last year, on sales that fell 2.1 percent to $957.7 million.....
