Globe posts loss on imports, lengthly lockout

CHICAGO — Globe Specialty Metals Inc.’s losses widened to $6.9 million in its fiscal first quarter due to low priced imports and a lengthy lockout at its Canadian operation, according to the company.

The New York-based silicon metal and silicon-based alloys producer saw net sales tumble 13.8 percent to about $173 million in the quarter ended Sept. 30 from $200.7 million a year previously. Total shipments dropped to 62,035 tonnes—31,619 tonnes of silicon metal and 30,416 tonnes of silicon-based alloys—in the quarter.....
