NEW YORK — A fatal "industrial accident" at ArcelorMittal USA LLC’s Indiana Harbor plant in East Chicago, Ind., has left one contractor dead and two others injured.

The incident early Nov. 13 involved work at the plant’s No. 3 basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steel production shop, a company spokesman said via e-mail. It wasn’t immediately clear if production was impacted.

The East Chicago police said they were notified at 6:51 a.m., and police were dispatched to the scene shortly thereafter, Lt. Marguerite Wilder told AMM, adding that the department will follow up with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

"The company immediately launched a joint investigation involving both management and the United Steelworkers (union)," the ArcelorMittal spokesman said. "Appropriate government agencies have also been notified. The health and safety of our employees and contractors remains the number one priority for ArcelorMittal."

Calls to OSHA and the local union weren’t returned.

ArcelorMittal’s No. 3 shop is equipped with two 280-ton-per-heat BOFs. Annual raw steel output is listed at 3.8 million tons in the Association for Iron Steel Technology’s directory of iron and steel plants.
