Turkish scrap buying cooperative seen unlikely

NEW YORK — A push by steel mills in Turkey’s largest steel-producing region to form a single agency to procure scrap for every mill there is unlikely to be successful, many scrap exporters said.

Several scrap exporters said they had no knowledge of a move to form a collective scrap buying company by steel mills in the Iskenderun and Osmaniye regions, which combined house 10 steelmakers with a production capacity of 16.4 million tonnes per year.

However, sources at some mills said efforts to achieve this goal are in full swing.

"Yes, it is true that we are trying to get mutual purchasing for Iskenderun’s (steel mills)," a source at one mill said, adding that conversations are in the final stages.....
