Rail group pushes for tank car regulation

CHICAGO — The Association of American Railroads (AAR) urged the U.S. Department of Transportation to press for tougher federal tank car regulations by requiring all tank cars used to transport flammable liquids to be retrofitted or replaced with cars built to more stringent standards.

The proposals, if adopted, could mean additional demand for specific steels.

In comments filed with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), the AAR said the safety upgrades it recommends will substantially reduce the likelihood of a hazardous release when a tank car is involved in an accident.....
